It’s hard to say where my insurance company started without giving a little background on myself. I grew up in Neshoba County, MS, the youngest of five children and the only boy on a small farm. We had all the animals including cattle, horses, hogs and chickens, but my dad made his living logging. By the time I was 10 years old I was going to work with my dad wagging a measuring stick and being a gopher for the hands that worked on the crew. I’ve told many people that I never knew what it was to be a child because I grew up on a logging job with adults. I did it all from running a chainsaw, driving a skidder, driving log trucks to doing the mechanic work. This was my way of life through high school and college. When I graduated college, I never considered another job. I came right back to logging.
It was the spring of 1996. For those of you who’ve been in the timber business for some time, you will remember that all of the mills were full and logging was at a stand still. It was at this time that I got the opportunity to go to work for Jimmy Tillman’s insurance agency in Philadelphia, MS. My thought was “it can’t be any worse than logging”. I fell in love with the insurance business and I’m thankful to this day to Jimmy for giving me the opportunity. It was during the time I worked with Tillman that I met my now partner, Tom Dickerson. Tom was a marketing representative for one of our equipment insurance companies, and he and I grew to be close friends.
It was around 2000 before I obtained my own insurance agency. I had a difficult time finding the companies that I needed to insure my clients. When the invitation came from a local agency, Philadelphia-Security Insurance, I merged my clients and employees with theirs.
After about four years, I began to feel the itch to be back in business for myself. This is when I called my friend, Tom Dickerson, who has a wealth of business knowledge. I wouldn’t let him off the phone until he agreed to go into business with me. Tom is from Atlanta so he bought a RV and put it on the reservoir in Jackson so he could manage that local office. We began our agency October 2003. April 1st, 2004, I purchased my clients from Philadelphia-Security Insurance and opened my office in Philadelphia, MS. I’m so thankful to the Lord, all of my loyal customers, the great group of employees we have and all of my insurance companies that this business has been a success. The main success is that I’m happy and now able to give the great service to all of our customers the way I’ve always wanted. This is not the end of the story. In October 2008, my partner Tom announced that he wanted to retire and move back to his family in Georgia. He had sacrificed so much being away those years. I will always appreciate him coming over and being responsible for me being able to be in business for myself. Thanks to a lot of hard work by my great employees and loyal clients, we have been able to expand to other locations. Capital Risk Insurance now has offices in Philadelphia, Jackson, Quitman and Sebastopol. We have also been fortunate to acquire a couple of agencies. Southern Insurance in Jackson/Flowood was acquired in September 2008. This agency primarily writes Oil and Gas Industry Insurance. Herrington Insurance in Union, MS was acquired in June 2009. Several more locations are in the works so stay tuned for further announcements. If you are not apart of our insurance family, please get acquainted with us so you can join the team. I promise you will be taken care of and greatly appreciated.
